Crafting with The Hollows: A Font for Handmade Stories

I was deep in my candle-making zone, surrounded by jars and the scent of vanilla bourbon, but I’d hit a creative wall. My new autumn candle line was ready, but the labels felt flat. I needed a font that felt organic, a bit rustic, but with a contemporary edge that could elevate my simple kraft paper tags. That’s when I first opened The Hollows. I typed out “Spiced Oak” and immediately, my product had a personality. It wasn’t just a label anymore; it was a piece of the story I was trying to tell.

The Visual Charm of The Hollows

The Hollows is a display font with a distinct, crafted character. Each letter feels deliberately drawn, with a unique hollowed-out or outlined style that gives it incredible texture and weight. It’s bold without being bulky, elegant without being fussy. The mood it creates is one of confident artistry—it whispers handmade but shouts quality. For makers like us, that balance is everything. It has the charm of a custom sign painter’s work, but the precision of a modern typeface, ready to be applied to our digital designs or cut out on a vinyl machine.

Bringing Products to Life

From that first candle label, I started seeing The Hollows everywhere in my shop. Its versatility for physical and digital products is remarkable.

For Physical Labels & Packaging

This font sings on tags and labels. I use it for my ceramic mug series, stamping the collection name like “Morning Rituals” directly onto the packaging. On tote bags, a simple “Market Bag” in The Hollows becomes a striking graphic feature. For my wedding client work, it transforms welcome signs and seating charts into focal pieces that feel both timeless and fresh. The clear, strong forms ensure it reads beautifully from a distance, whether on a shop sign or a product shelf.

For Stationery & Printables

Greeting cards and invitations are where The Hollows truly shines as a display font. It’s perfect for the main headline—think “Happy Birthday,” “Save the Date,” or “Thank You.” I designed a set of minimalist wedding invitations using it for the couple’s names, paired with a delicate script for the details. The contrast was stunning. For digital printables like wall art or planner covers, using The Hollows for a single inspiring word or a short phrase (“Create,” “Gather,” “Autumn”) gives the art an anchor, a bold statement that draws the eye.

For Seasonal & Boutique Items

When the holidays roll around, this font adapts beautifully. “Merry & Bright” on a gift tag, “Winter Solstice” on a candle label, or “Farmhouse Christmas” on a digital art print—it brings a handcrafted, festive warmth. For my boutique-style product tags, using The Hollows for the product type, like “Raw Honey” or “Lavender Salve,” instantly communicates a premium, artisanal feel that customers recognize.

Readability & Practical Design Advice

Because The Hollows is a display font, its best use is for short phrases, titles, names, and decorative wording. It’s not designed for long paragraphs on a product description card. For readability, especially on smaller items like stickers or embossed leather tags, I always test the size. At a larger scale, it’s incredibly clear. For cutting machines like Cricut or Silhouette, the clean, defined outlines of The Hollows make for excellent cuts, whether in vinyl for stickers or as a design layer for printed cardstock.

Font pairing is key. I almost always pair The Hollows with a clean, neutral sans-serif font (like a simple geometric sans) for body text and details. This lets the display font be the star while keeping all the practical information easy to read. Occasionally, for a more romantic project, I pair it with a thin script font. The contrast creates a dynamic, professional-looking design hierarchy.

A Note on Licensing & Files

Before using any font for physical products or digital downloads you sell, checking the license is a must. A commercial license for The Hollows allows you to use it on your finished products, packaging, and marketing. I always verify the included file formats (OTF, TTF often work seamlessly with design software and cutting machines) and explore any extra features. Some fonts include alternates or ligatures that can add even more custom flair to a product name or logo. Multilingual support can also be important if your market is global.

Ultimately, The Hollows isn’t just a tool; it’s a design partner. It has that rare ability to infuse a sense of crafted intention into everything it touches—from a humble sticker to a luxurious invitation suite. It helps build brand consistency because its character is so memorable. When customers see that distinct typography on your new product line or your shop banner, they begin to connect with your brand’s visual story. In a world of handmade goods, that connection, that perceived quality and emotional appeal, is what turns a viewer into a customer. It starts with a font, and it grows into a story told on labels, cards, and the things we make.
